My research on Konkani films led me into restoration of a 300 ft of the first Konkani film which was in very bad condition. I am proud to state that an unavailable Konkani film in Goa I could procure from the Gulf. Similarly I came in contact with non-Konkani speaking journalists who did their best to help me in my venture. The research work on Konkani films helped me in establishing rapport with several film organizations like National Film Archives of India, Pune Film Heritage Foundation, Mumbai and Cinestan, Mumbai where I could learn about the need for restoration of old films for posterity. Goa government offers a grant of Rs 20 lakhs whereas the Karnataka government provides Rs 10 lakhs as subsidy to Konkani films. Four films each have music by Ashok Patki, Wilfy Rebimbus and Mukesh Ghatwal. Many Bollywood personnel have contributed to Konkani films in acting, singing and providing music. Afficianados of films from other parts of India and abroad are taking a keen interest in Konkani films. Two Konkani films have been certified ‘A’ by the censor board. Few producers with an eye on the subsidy sold their films, the copies of which are now untraceable. Shooting of another film witnessed an accident which actually was caused by earthquake. Timely intervention of a benefactor prevailed over a hitch in the release of a famed movie. One film had the backing of notorious smuggler Haji Mastan. The idea of preserving this heritage for posterity is therefore handicapped.Īs these films are produced in different regions who have varied scripts, transliteration was another obstacle. It was a troublesome experience in getting information of old Konkani films as those who have it are not willing to share or part with the information. No master prints of old films are available as the pro ducers sold them to cover their production costs.According to reliable sources, the print of the first Konkani is available but the relatives of the producers are reluctant to part with the treasured possession, Similarly, my efforts in assemblage of information of these films from Doordarshan, All India Radio proved futile. My attempts to obtain relevant details from producers of old films bore no fruit as they were not in their possession. A prominent editor forwarded me an article on Konkani films appearing in a Daily published outside Goa which prompted me to undertake research work on Konkani films as I found it to be incomplete.
